Aeroplan today announced that Aeroplan Members can now use their miles for the Premium Economy cabin on applicable Air Canada flights when booking both ClassicFlight and Market Fare Flight Rewards. This is excellent news, as you now have more options when redeeming miles for travel. Air Canada’s premium economy is currently offered in the following routes:
|Montreal||London-Heathrow (from May 1 to October 1, 2015)
|Toronto-Pearson||Copenhagen (except between January 31 and March 27, 2015)
London-Heathrow (until April 30, 2015)*
Paris (from December 1, 2014 to March 27, 2015)
Tokyo-Narita (starting May 1, 2015)
Zurich (starting May 1, 2015)
|Vancouver||Beijing (from February 1 to April 30, 2015)
Seoul (starting March 1, 2015)
Tokyo-Narita (starting December 15, 2014)
As you can see, almost all of these routes are North America – Europe 1, and North America – Asia 1 zone. These will cost you 75K and 125K miles respectively. Benefits of Premium Economy vs regular Economy class include a greater recline, more seat pitch (38 inch), better in-flight meals, amenity kit, as well as priority services at the airport.
Would I redeem my miles for PE? Most likely not. An extra 15K for Europe and 25K for Asia will upgrade myself to business class roundtrip, with lie-flat bed and access to Star Alliance lounges. Though having the option is certainly better than not, there will be cases where business class is sold out on the dates for your travel, in that case, having Premium Economy available is better than regular Economy!
